Narcotics Anonymous urges addicts to find help to stay clean over the holidays in Cape Town, South Africa

Written by: Qama Qukula           20 December 2018 3:43 PM

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) has encouraged people struggling with drug addiction to reach out for help this season.

NA is a 12-step fellowship that helps recovering addicts with their long-term recovery from all types of substance abuse.

Spokesperson Genee Pienaar says the organisation focuses on the disease of addiction, rather than one particular drug.

Meetings play a major part in recovery, with 72 meetings a week held in various areas in the Western Cape alone.

We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean.

— Genee Pienaar, Narcotics Anonymous Western Cape spokesperson

Pienaar, who has been clean for nine years, says the holiday season often sees recovering addicts relapse due to lack of support.

She explains that NA is not a religious organisation, but members refer to a higher spiritual power or a god of their understanding.

Our message is that any addict can lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.  You don’t have to be clean to come to a meeting. The meetings are free and we are not a religious organisation.

— Genee Pienaar, Narcotics Anonymous Western Cape spokesperson
